VR Jam Spotlight: Stone Road Mixes Board Games, Puzzles and Adventure for Gear VR

One might think that slow, grid-based movement isn’t ideal for virtual reality (VR) experiences, creating an immediate obstacle for players. In fact, as Psytec Games’ Crystal Rift has already proved, this type of navigation is actually ideal for the technology, creating a comfortable experience that players can take at their own pace. It’s a system that has also found itself way into another VR title in the form of Stone Road, a part board game, part puzzle and part fantasy-based adventure experience for Gear VR.

Stone Road 1

Little is known about Stone Road at this point in time although the developer does note that it is inspired by mobile titles such as Zen Bound, The Room and Hitman GO as well as the Legend of Grimrock and the Myst series. It appears that players will be pitted against NPCs.

“The artwork of Stone Road is one of the challenges for this competition,” the developer notes on the official entry page. “In order to keep the player feeling as if they are inside the game world the environments must be convincing, consistent and intriguing. In order to achieve this I am using a combination of traditional 3D modelling and photogrammetry to create assets that look convincing enough but also, hopefully, new and interesting enough for the player to feel comfortable and want to stay in the game as long as possible.”

Stone Road has been entered into the videogame track of Oculus VR’s ongoing Mobile VR Jam. The title hopes to secure the grand prize of $200,000 USD, with runner up prizes of $100,000, $50,000 and $10,000 also on offer. Having just passed its next milestone in which developer had to provide images, the Jam is now expecting video footage of each and every entrant to be delivered by 4th May 2015. The final build for Stone Road must be submitted by 11th May, with the overall winners for the competition to be announced on 3rd June.

VRFocus will continue to follow Stone Road and all other entries into the Mobile VR Jam, reporting back with the latest on them.
