Dream Dev Hoping to Port to UE4 in the Future

Virtual reality (VR) fans that have followed HyperSloth Games’ upcoming adventure title, Dream, will be aware of the team’s troubled past with the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) and Epic Games’ Unreal Engine toolset. The anticipated title has been developed on the Unreal Development Kit (UDK) and features support for the first development kit (DK1) of the Oculus Rift. However, Epic Games hasn’t added support for the second development kit (DK2) into UDK, instead turning its attention to Unreal Engine 4. Dream has been unable to implement DK2 support, then, but that may change in the near future.

Writing in an update to the Steam Early Access version of Dream, HyperSloth Games noted that it hopes to one day port the title to Unreal Engine 4. “We do however hope to port to UE4 sometime in the future but this is a big job and our main focus is getting Dream finished first,” the developer notes. “UE4 can port to Oculus DK2 and has a better relationship with Mac.” Of course, porting to Unreal Engine 4 would also open up opportunities for other HMDs, including the consumer Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, though HyperSloth Games didn’t comment on the chances of bringing Dream to these devices.

Elsewhere, the developer confirmed that it had taken some time off of work on Dream to focus on University work, but now the team of three was back to development. The studio hopes to have an English beta version of the title completed by the end of May, complete with the final endings, levels and more. The full release is now looking at a July/August 2015 launch window.

In Dream, players are cast as Howard Phillips who suffers from dread and despair when awake but has peaceful dreams. Players explore Phillips’ dreams unravelling their significance to his future. VRFocus will continue to follow the title closely, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
