Epic Games Coming to SVVR with ‘VR Innovation’ Talk

Earlier in the month VRFocus reported on the reveal of the first speakers and other attendees for the upcoming Silicon Valley Virtual Reality (SVVR) Conference & Expo, which runs from 18th – 19th May 2015 at the San Jose Convention Center. A long list of developers and more were announced, including SteamVR creator Valve, Dreamworks Animation, Nvidia and more. Not every speaker was revealed, however, and now Epic Games has confirmed that it will also be heading to the show with its Unreal Engine 4.

The company’s J.J. Hoesing, who works as as a VR engineer, will be hosting a talk titled ‘Staying on Top of VR Innovation With Unreal Engine 4‘ at 15:40 PDT on 19th May. He’ll discuss lessons that Epic Games has learned over the past few years of working with Oculus VR’s hardware as well as take look at the ‘major VR platforms’ that the engine now supports. This includes the likes of the HTC Vive and SteamVR with its Room-Scale user tracking system. Hoesing’s previous work includes positions at Snowblind Studios, Monolith, and WB Games.

Unreal Engine 4 has proved a popular choice for VR developers over the course of the past year and it’s already powering two titles for the HTC Vive in Dovetail Games’ Dovetail Games Fishing and Epic Games’ own Showdown demo. This month saw the company launch Unreal Engine 4.8, which integrated the SteamVR platform in time for when the first developer edition kits of the HTC Vive are sent out to those that signed up for them. The Vive itself is currently heading for a full consumer launch in time for holiday 2015.

VRFocus will continue to follow Epic Games’ work in VR and will be at SVVR Conference & Expo next week to report on all the latest with the technology.
