Froniter Developments Testing Elite: Dangerous Mac and PC Cross-Play, Screenshot Revealed

Elite: Dangerous launched on PC back in December 2014 with full support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). Since its release, many fans have been waiting on the promised Mac version of the title. Creator Frontier Developments has been making strides with this edition in recent weeks, launching a Mac beta to prepare the build for a full release in the future. Now the developer is testing out one of the Mac version’s key features; cross-play with the PC edition. A new screenshot below proves it.

As Frontier Developments noted in its weekly newsletter: “Players with PC and Mac beta access can now download a new Elite: Dangerous beta from the launcher. PC players won’t notice many differences from the release version besides adjusted beta prices to fast-track testers to the more exotic ships, because the big new feature we’re testing is a game-changer that should be almost invisible: crossplay between PC and Mac.”

The screenshot below shows two ships. According to the developer, the black craft on the left is playing on PC and the white craft on the right is playing on Mac. “In the latest beta you’ll be seamlessly matched with players on both platforms, and you should never know which format they’re running without asking,” the developer added.

No official release date for the Mac version has been given, although Frontier Developments has noted that it ‘isn’t far away’. Following its launch, the developer will also be bringing the title to the Xbox One console. A launch on PlayStation 4 is also expected, although not until a exclusivity agreement with Microsoft has been fulfilled.

Frontier Developments is also currently working on the third major content update to the title, Powerplay. VRFocus will continue to follow Elite: Dangerous closely, reporting back with ant further updates on its progress.
