Frontier Pledges to Support Other VR HMDs with Elite: Dangerous

UK-based Frontier Developments joined a somewhat exclusive list of studios last year when it launched its anticipated space simulation experience, Elite: Dangerous, with full support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). The title is currently compatible with the second development kit (DK2) of the device, seeing as it’s the only HMD that has seen an ‘open’ release in its online sale to developers. Of course, a new version of the Oculus Rift is on the way, as is Valve and HTC’s Vive HMD. Will Frontier Developments be supporting these kits?


VRFocus put that question to studio founder, David Braben, at this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) in an interview that will be published later this week. “There are lots of new things coming, of course,” Braben said in reference to the range of HMDs on the horizon. “It’s been a fascinating show because there are now so many more headsets coming. With all of those coming, actually it’s amazing to think that there isn’t a single headset out yet, even though you have to sign that you’re a developer to get Oculus even. But we’ll see and obviously we will support the ones that are coming out.”

Braben noted that, at the time of the interview, he hadn’t yet sampled the Vive, but was excited to do so.

It certainly sounds as if support for Valve’s upcoming HMD, which will be launching in time for holiday 2015, is on the way for Elite: Dangerous, then. A PlayStation 4 version of the title is also planned, which could well be supported by the Project Morpheus HMD. However Frontier Developments must complete an exclusivity agreement with Microsoft for an Xbox One version of the title, due this year, before work on a PlayStation 4 version can be officially confirmed. Elsewhere, the developer is currently preparing a Beta for its Powerplay update and has this week launched its Mac version.
