Gear VR Exclusive Pixel Ripped 1989 Announced

Brazilian videogame developer Ana Ribeiro has created one of the most highly-anticipated virtual reality (VR) videogames in Pixel Ripped. Currently in development for the Oculus Rift and other head-mounted displays (HMDs), Pixel Ripped is simply too demanding an experience to port to a mobile device. Instead, VRFocus can reveal that Ribeiro’s team are now working on a Gear VR exclusive sister title: Pixel Ripped 1989.

The original demonstration level for Pixel Ripped, formerly known as Pixel Rift, was created as a solo project by Ribeiro during her last year of study at the National Film and Television School (NFTS). This level featured protagonist Nicola as a teenager battling against the pressures of school work while trying to complete the handheld instalment of her favourite videogame series. The demand for more content based upon this demo was overwhelming, and as such Ribeiro and Stef Keegan, appointed as producer last year, have decided to create an entirely separate experience for Gear VR.

“Because many people [were] asking more from the school level and I did want to add all the ideas I could when it was a student project, we decided to do the Pixel Ripped 1989 as a full experience,” Ribeiro tells VRFocus. “We are building the game from scratch.”

No screenshots for Pixel Ripped 1989 are currently available, however the artwork on this page, designed by Ze Wilson (logo) and Gianna Michèle Kaye (keyart) provide an intriguing glimpse as to how the style of the videogame may differ to the home format releases.

Ribeiro plans to launch Pixel Ripped 1989 as a primer for Pixel Ripped, arriving on Gear VR towards the end of 2015. Pixel Ripped itself is likely to launch episodically throughout 2016. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on the Pixel Ripped franchise and any other VR titles from Ribeiro’s team.
