Gear VR S6

Gear VR for S6 Available Now

Back in March 2015 Samsung revealed its latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S6, along with a curved spin-off known as the Galaxy S6 edge. At the time of the reveal the company confirmed that it would also be releasing a new version of its smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), the Gear VR, to support the new phones. The handsets themselves launched back in April, but today finally marks the release of the new HMD in the USA.

Gear VR for Samsung Galaxy S6

The Gear VR for S6 is set to arrive at the homes of customers that have pre-ordered the device through either Samsung’s own website or via the Best Buy website from today onwards, though take note that the latter option already appears to be out of stock. A launch at physical Best Buy stores is expected on 15th May 2015.

The kit’s release is supported by all content that has already released for the earlier edition of Gear VR, which supported the Galaxy Note 4 handset, as well as a handful of experiences that have come to the Galaxy S6 first. These include Omega Agent, a jet pack-based videogame from Fireproof Games, and Battle for Avengers Tower, a 360 degree experience designed to promote the most recent entry into Marvel’s film franchise, Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Despite being the second release for the Gear VR, the Galaxy S6 version of the HMD still carries the ‘Innovator Edition’ branding placed upon it by co-creator Oculus VR. This essentially means that, while the device is being sold to consumers, it’s largely aimed at developers and enthusiasts. A true, consumer-focused version of the device is on the way for later in the year and is expected to be compatible with Samsung’s as-of-yet unannounced Galaxy Note 5.

There’s currently no word on when the Gear VR for S6 will be arriving outside of the US, save for Japan where it is expected to launch this month. The Oculus Store, which hosts all compatible content for the HMD, recently saw international integration of commercialisation, allowing users to purchase premium content for the first time.

VRFocus will continue to follow Gear VR closely, reporting back with any further updates on the device.

  1. There are some popping up on Ebay with international posting. Very very tempting… my S6 is mocking me.
