Google Expeditions Announced, Taking VR to the Classroom

Virtual reality (VR) is set to make a huge impact in the education industry, and today Google has announced that it will be one of the first to act on this potential. The company has revealed Google Expeditions, a new concept for classrooms that uses the Google Cardboard head-mounted display (HMD).

Announced at the Google I/O developer conference today, Expeditions brings multiple Cardboard kits to classrooms. Using a tablet, a teacher interacts with what these devices are showing, allowing them to easily switch between 360 degree photos of various locations. Students then use these kits for educational experiences. Google has already confirmed that it is working with The Planetary Society, The American Museum of Expeditions, and The Palace of Versailles on content for this system.

It’s not clear just how Google Expeditions will be distributed, though the company did note that it hopes to have the system ready for the new school year. VRFocus will continue to follow Google’s work in VR, reporting back with the latest updates on them.
