Hammerhead Reveals Lexus Virtual Drive for Oculus and Mobile VR

It’s been a while in a while since there’s been an updated from Hammerhead VR, the UK-based studio working with virtual reality (VR) technology. Work continues on the team’s upcoming underwater experience, Undercurrent but, in the meantime, the company has revealed and partially released a brand new promotional experience in partnership with Japanese vehicle manufacturer, Lexus. That experience is Lexus Virtual Drive for mobile head-mounted displays (HMDs) and the Oculus Rift.

The experience pits players in a Lexus RC F as it races around the Ascari track in Spain. The three minute video gives users not only a view from inside the car itself but also from several trackside shots and on-car shots. It is available now for both the Android and iOS operating systems (OS) using the Google Cardboard kit. An Oculus Rift edition is also mentioned on an official website, though yet to surface. The piece can also be experienced without a VR HMD.

Google Cardboard itself has recently seen a number of updates, including support for iOS and a new viewer that supports larger phones. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all apps that come to the device, reporting back with the latest on them.
