Kite & Lightning Release Senza Peso as Open-Source Project

Back in 2014 Los Angeles-based studio Kite & Lightning captured the attention of the virtual reality (VR) community with the release of its compelling VR title, Senza Peso. The piece, which was released in support of one of the studio’s own videos, gained high praise from fans that sampled it with the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). The project, which was developed with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4, has gone on to see numerous improvements since then, and is today being released as open-source software.


This release, which acts as a sort of behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Senza Peso, can now be downloaded for free. Based on Unreal Engine 4.5, Kite & Lightning had planned to release it on Epic Games’ marketplace, but found that subsequent releases of the engine were breaking the project each time. The studio also notes that the original, rushed conditions that Senza Peso was built in mean that this mean not be the best way to learn VR development for Unreal Engine 4. Sound has also been removed due to licensing rights.

That said, the project has been released with the hope of giving VR developers greater insight into the creation process, with Kite & Lightning anticipating that it will help others build even better VR experiences.

“Because of the overwhelming positive fan reaction to Senza Peso, we’ve gotten so many amazing opportunities that allowed us to pursue VR full-time. We wanted to give back to the community so that others can share in the awesomesauce so they could in turn make even awesomer VR,” the developers said in a statement to VRFocus.

Since Senza Peso‘s release Kite & Lightning has worked on a number of high-profile projects, including a promotion experience for TV’s The Voice. VRFocus will continue to follow the developer’s work, reporting back with the latest from it.
