New VR Short Film SONAR Released

Virtual reality (VR) movies are set to be big business in the future. Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) maker Oculus VR proved as much earlier in the year when it announced its film-dedicated division Oculus Story Studio. But the technology is still a long way off from allowing viewers to watch hours-long stories in one sitting, making short films the best type of experience for VR video right now. Now a new VR short film has been revealed in the form of SONAR, which is currently available for the Oculus Rift. A trailer for the experience can be seen below.

Created at a summer 2014 project by Philipp Maas and Dominik Stockhausen at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg, Germany, SONAR allows viewers to explore an ancient cave system from which a strange signal is coming from. The piece is computer-generated, with the creators also hoping to bring it to other HMDs such as Gear VR and Project Morpheus in the future. It can currently be downloaded by entering an email address into an official website to receive a download link. It can also be downloaded via Oculus Share.

The team behind SONAR will be at the FMX Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Transmedia on 5th – 8th May in Stuttgart, Germany. Other VR exhibitors at the show include Crytek, which will be bringing its impressive Back to Dinosaur Island demo for attendees to see, and VR pioneer Mark Bolas, who will be hosting a talk during the event.

VRFocus will continue to follow all of the latest VR releases, reporting back with any further updates.
