Oculus: Mobile VR Jam Entrants Can Come to Other Headsets & Gear VR Store

Oculus VR’s Mobile VR Jam reaches its submission stage today. Developers working on their entries for the Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) will have to now submit playable builds that a team of judges will be testing out. There’s no denying that the Jam has been hugely beneficial for Gear VR itself, with developers revealing a wide range of intriguing new projects for the device. As it turns out, Gear VR might not be the only kit to benefit from the competition.

Oculus VR has recently confirmed that anything developed for the Jam is allowed to be ‘cross-published’, essentially meaning that developers can bring their work to other HMDs such as the Oculus Rift and, perhaps in time, the HTC Vice and Project Morpheus. The company’s Erisana confirmed as much in the most recent edition of the VR Jam Q&A on Reddit, stating: “You are welcome to cross-publish your game. The only requirement is that VR Jam winners publish at least on the Gear VR.”

Elsewhere, Oculus VR’s Gypsy816 also confirmed that those who have entered the Jam can submit their content to the Oculus VR Store for sale. “Yes, you can submit to the Store before winners are announced,” Gypsy816 wrote. “As soon as you think it’s ready to be submitted to the Store, you can!”

It could well be that other HMDs enjoy the results of this Jam in the near future, then. Oculus VR is offering over $1,000,000 USD in cash prizes for the Jam, which consists of two tracks. The first category, for videogames, consists of a $200,000 grand prize and runner-up awards of $100,000, $50,000, and $10,000. The second track is for apps and experiences, offering a grand prize of $100,000 and runner-up prizes of $50,000, $30,000, and $10,000. Each track also has a community voted award which offers a further $10,000. Oculus VR expects to announce the winners of the Jam in early June 2015.

VRFocus will continue to follow the VR Jam closely, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
