Project Morpheus Support Confirmed for Ark: Survival Evolved

Less than an hour ago VRFocus reported that Seattle-based indie developer Studio Wildcard would be bringing its videogame, ARK: Survival Evolved, to the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) on PC. At the time it wasn’t confirmed if the developer would also be adding support for the Project Morpheus HMD to the PlayStation 4 version. The developer itself has just cleared up that query.

A new PlayStation Blog post, written by Studio Wild Card Founder and Technical Director, Jesse Rapczak, has confirmed that ARK: Survival Evolved will feature support for Project Morpheus. “After working for almost three years pioneering and creating high-end experiences for HMDs, I can tell you with good confidence that not much compares to soaring over the jungles and mountains of ARK’s islands on the back of your very own pteranodon,” the developer wrote. “The feeling of immersion the team has created in this beautiful world simply has to be experienced first-hand; it is profound and impactful, and even for me was a little bit surprising when I first tried ARK in VR.

“When you design an experience like this, one of the most important things is to not fall into the trap of focusing on one platform and type of input while letting the chips fall where they may on the rest. Just like mouse versus gamepad, you have to design with VR in mind from the beginning. All of your testing, all of your gameplay elements, they need to tie into the experience of wearing a VR headset, the different FOV, the perception of motion and presence that exists between looking at a flat computer screen and virtually “being there”. In the end we don’t just “allow” for VR, we recommend it, and ARK is a richer game because of it.”

It now only remains to be seen if ARK: Survival Evolved will also support the HTC Vive HMD on PC. The first-person title starts player on a beach, stripped of any items. From there, they survive again harsh weather environments and dinosaurs. Over 60 different creatures feature which players tame and ride as they build up their character’s skill sets. Rebel tribes consisting of other players will be set up with teams competing to gather to most sophisticated weapons and more.

ARK: Survival Evolved will be launching on PC via Steam Early Access on 2nd June 2015. The full version of the title is expected to hit PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in early 2016. Project Morpheus itself will be arriving in the first half of the year.

VRFocus will continue to follow ARK: Survival Evolved closely, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
