Sony Forming ‘ambitious’ New VR Dev, North West Studio

This E3 is expected to be a big one for Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and its Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). Having already been reintroduced at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) earlier in the year the kit is expected to see new games and information revealed at the upcoming show on 16th – 18th June. But some news isn’t waiting for E3; it’s been revealed that SCE has formed a brand new first-party development studio to work exclusively on Project Morpheus.

The news was revealed over on NeoGAF where one user uncovered a job listing for an Experienced Graphics Engine Programmer for a new SCE studio by the name of North West Studio. The team is based in the UK, although a specific location other than the obvious ‘North West’ is yet to be confirmed. The detailed listing, seen below, notes that the ‘ambitious’ new studio will create ‘original’ videogames for Project Morpheus. Team size is expected to be small but highly experienced and it’s noted to be working with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine technology.

Crucially, North West Studio seemingly already has a videogame in the works, although the title is currently in pre-production, so don’t expected to hear much on it at E3. It was recently revealed that SCE will be holding a press conference at this year’s Paris Games Week in October and could well hold another show at its PlayStation Experience fan event towards the end of the year. There are plenty more chances to reveal more about North West Studio and any other VR titles in the remainder of 2015, then.

Project Morpheus will be launching in the first half of 2016, putting it just behind the launch of the HTC Vive on PC at the end of 2015 and around the same time as the Q1 2016 launch of the Oculus Rift. VRFocus will continue to follow the HMD closely, reporting back with any further updates on it.
