Vertigo Games Prepping VR Titles for Oculus Launch Line-up

At long last, the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) has a release window. As creator Oculus VR revealed yesterday, the anticipated kit will be arriving in Q1 2016. This finally gives the many developers working on titles for the device a target to aim for. Netherlands-based Vertigo Games is one studio that’s been waiting a long time to hear about a consumer release of the HMD. Now that the news is out, the developer is aiming to bring its VR work to the kit in time for release.

The team’s Richard Stitselaar confirmed as much to VRFocus when asked for comment about the HMD’s release date. “It is great to finally have a date that we as game developers can commit to as well,” Stitselaar said. “Vertigo Games will aim to have its VR games ready for release in time for the consumer version of the Oculus hardware.”

Vertigo Games is best known for World of Diving, its online diving videogame which is currently on Steam Early Access. This version of the title already supports the Oculus Rift’s second development kit (DK2), allowing players to visit shipwrecks and more in VR.

Interestingly, the developer has also announced its second VR title in Skyworld. This is a turn-based strategy experience in which players take an overhead view of a toy-like world as they command units. However, Skyworld is yet to be officially announced for the Oculus Rift, as it was first revealed for Valve’s HTC Vive HMD, taking full advantage of that HMD’s Room Scale user tracking. Could it be that Skyworld is also on its way to the Oculus Rift? If so, how will it compensate for the lack of Room Scale functionality?

There are plenty of questions still to be answered about the consumer Oculus Rift, but at least developers now have a target to aim for. VRFocus will continue to follow the kit closely, reporting back with the latest on it.
