VR Jam Finalists Spotlight: Atop The Wizard’s Tower is Stylised Tower Defence

There have been a number of tower defence-based entries into Oculus VR’s Mobile VR Jam. Virtual reality’s (VR) head-tracking technology presents some unique opportunities for the genre that a handful of developers are taking advantage of. One such developer is James Scott, who has been selected as one of the finalists for the VR Jam with his entry, Atop The Wizard’s Tower.

As a video below shows, Atop The Wizard’s Tower casts players as a wizard that uses his perch to gather resources and use the elements to attack enemies. Players combine four different types of elements with towers, or use them to create allies. The title is completely controlled using the Gear VR’s touchpad and head-tracking technology. Scott notes that the title is intended to feel like a diorama with moving pieces and plenty of chances for player interactions.

“The desire was to reward the player for looking around, managing their resources, and spending them wisely,” the developer notes on the official VR Jam entry page. “It rewards quick thinking, strategic planning, and keeping calm under pressure. There is a special kind of tension created by having the player look away from the action in order to grab more resources.”

The build submitted to judges can also be sampled through this site. As part of the videogame track of the mobile VR build, the title is in the running for a $200,000 USD grand prize along with runner-up awards of $100,000, $50,000, and $10,000. It could also be selected for a community-voted prize of $10,000.

VRFocus will continue to follow all entries into the Mobile VR Jam, reporting back with the latest updates on them.
