VR Jam Spotlight: HUE Combines Puzzle Solving with Mountain Exploration

Perhaps the two most successful genres to be adapted into virtual reality (VR) thus far in terms of immersion and innovation are exploration and puzzle videogames. VR head-mounted displays (HMDs) allow players to truly lose themselves in new areas while also presenting unique new mechanics to explore on the puzzle side. HUE, an entry into Oculus VR’s ongoing Mobile VR Jam from Ryan Huffman, is looking to mix these two elements into one experience for the Gear VR smartphone-based HMD.

HUE is a first-person experience in which players explore a mysterious mountaintop. As they trek around the environment players will uncover strange panels, each of which presenting a puzzle that they must solve. These challenges involve changing the colour of the panel in order to roll a ball towards a key. The title is played using a compatible gamepad, allowing players full control over their movements. As with all submissions, those interested can currently sample the experience by downloading it from an official entry page.

HUE is part of videogame track of the Mobile VR Jam, hoping to earn the grand prize of $200,000 USD. Runner-up prizes also consist of $100,000, $50,000, and $10,000, with a community voted award also granting a further $10,000. Entries are being judged by a panel that includes the likes of Oculus VR’s Palmer Luckey and John Carmack.

VRFocus will continue to follow any and all submissions into the VR Jam, reporting back with the latest on them.
