VR Jam Spotlight: Mecha Tower Mixes the FPS with Tower Defence

Virtual reality (VR) technology is giving developers a chance to look at classic videogame genres in entirely different ways. Studios are using the unique, isolated format to create new co-op experiences and enhancing horror titles far beyond what’s possible with standard displays. Another genre that’s seeing someone of a unique revival thanks to the technology is tower defence. Developers are using head-mounted displays (HMDs) to add intriguing new features to this classic way to play. Mecha Tower is one such example of this.

Developed by Bilal Chbib, Gihad Chbib and Lino Morales as part of the ongoing Mobile VR jam for Gear VR smartphone-based HMD, Mecha Tower mixes elements of the tower defence genre with that of the first-person shooter (FPS). While players can assume a top-down view, planting towers that will take out waves of enemies as seen in many other tower defence titles, it’s also possible to lay down a ‘Mecha Tower’. This titular unit allows players to assume full control in a first-person perspective so that they can join in on the action.

As the developers explain, Mecha Tower boasts a cosmic/sci-fi setting that has been inspired by the likes of Tron. Games start out on an empty board that players must populate with their own units to efficiently eliminate enemies. These opponents march in from a black hole. Each tower has three defining attributes in fire rate, strength and areal damage while enemies also vary in health points, speed and quantity.

Mecha Tower is part of the videogames category of the Mobile VR Jam, which is offering a grand prize of $200,000 USD with runner up prizes including $100,000, $50,000 and $10,000. VRFocus will continue to follow each and every VR Jam entrant, reporting back with the latest updates on them.
