VR Jam Spotlight: Private Eye Case Files is a Prequel to the Anticipated Oculus Title

A few weeks ago VRFocus reported on the news that indie developer Jake Slack was planning to bring his virtual reality (VR) focused vidoegame series, Private Eye, to the Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD) as part of the ongoing Mobile VR Jam. Little was revealed about the title at the time, save for the name Private Eye Case Files: The Wooden Lady. With said Jam passing its third milestone this week, more and more details about the title, its gameplay, and its story have finally been revealed.

Private Eye Case Files: The Wooden Lady acts as a prequel to the upcoming Oculus Rift title, following the first ever case for protagonist Detective Sam Sunderland. When high-profile industrialist Robert Rosentelle is found dead in his family manor, Sunderland is called in to head up a case that doesn’t quite fit. “Under the shrewd judgement of his superiors, Sam will need to trust in his convictions and dig a little deeper if he want’s to solve the mystery of the wooden lady,” Slack writes on the title’s official entry page.

Set within Rosentelle’s manor, players will have to scour environments, searching for clues as to what transpired on the night he was murdered. As more hints reveal themselves, players will uncover a story of a troubled family with a dark past. Any evidence found can also be used to question one of seven suspects and eventually find the truth. “This provides an innovative way of presenting the player with choices, both practical and moral, and as with reality, there are always consequences,” Slack notes.

Private Eye Case Files: The Wooden Lady finds itself as part of the Videogame track in the Mobile VR Jam. This category is offering a grand prize of $200,000 USD, with runner-up positions securing $100,000, $50,000, and $10,000 respectively. VRFocus will continue to follow the Jam closely, reporting back with any further updates on it.
