VR World-Building Title AlterVerse Launches Greenlight Campaign

Plenty of virtual reality (VR) titles allow players to be immersed, but few are currently allowing them to create. Indie developer Dog Star VR Studios is making that the focus of its upcoming world-building title, AlterVerse. This month has seen a new Steam Greenlight campaign launch for the project. The campaign hopes to raise enough positive votes in order to be approved for sale on Valve’s digital store. Should it prove successful then AlterVerse will launch with support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) and ‘other VR hardware’.

AlterVerse is described as something of a mix between Bethesda Softwork’s massive RPG, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Mojang’s iconic creation title, Minecraft, and the online portal into other worlds, Second Life. The title allows players to craft their own worlds using a number of different tools through a Realm Server. These worlds can serve a range of purposes such as PvP arenas for online multiplayer or simply a person space for creators to relax within. World themes can range from sci-fi to fantasy and more.

Gameplay itself consists of a mix of both melee and ranged combat, seemingly played in both first and third person. Different gameplay modes will also feature, tasking players with taking control of castles and more. Along with crafting worlds, a more traditional crafting system will be in place to create more tools, weapons, armour, and even spells. Players can also expect in-game voice chat, leaderboard scoring for online play and even a companion app.

Dog Star VR Studios claims that it has been working on the AlterVerse project for half a decade. It’s not clear just when the title might launch, nor what ‘other VR hardware’ refers to, though hopefully it concerns the HTC Vive HMD. VRFocus will continue to follow the title’s progress, reporting back with any further updates on it.
