CryENGINE Gets Oculus Support

It’s been a few months since Crysis developer Crytek has provided a status update on support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) being integrated into its CryENGINE toolset. Back at the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March the company told VRFocus that said support would be arriving within the next ‘few weeks’. That didn’t quite happen, but the company is today finally releasing an update for the engine that includes support for the VR device.


The update, titled CryENGINE 3.8.1, allows both full licensees and Engine-as-a-Service subscribers access to VR support for their projects. Also featured is what is described as ‘initial support’ for AMD’s LiquidVR tech. Elsewhere, the update adds support for OpenGL to allow for seamless porting to the Linux operating system (OS). Integration with Android TV systems is also included.

We can’t wait to see what other CRYENGINE users create now that they have VR capabilities at their fingertips.”

Crytek had a brand new VR project to reveal this week in the form of Robinson: The Journey. VRFocus will continue to follow the company’s progress in VR, reporting back with the latest updates on it.
