Gameface Labs Reveals New Hybrid Mobile/PC VR HMD

Currently mobile virtual reality (VR) and the full blown head-mounted displays (HMD) like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, are two completely different sides of the same coin. Now Gameface Labs have just announced plans to create the world’s first VR device to offer both mobile and PC experiences to address the booming gaming and headset markets.

The GameFace Labs Developer Console (GFLDC) will offer a standalone Android  console experience for both fully un-tethered VR, as well as doubling up to become a tethered PC VR HMD. Users will be able to connect to the SteamVR platform from Valve, a company who produce leading-edge VR technologies and award-winning videogames on one of the largest entertainment platforms, all through an Open VR driver.


The GFLDC HMD, which is expected to be available in Q2 2016, offers an exciting VR solution and will utilize content from both SteamVR and Google Cardboard platforms. With its onboard computer, GameFace Labs is also exploring the use of Valve’s revolutionary Lighthouse tracking and input technology in a completely wireless environment. Featuring a 2560 x 1440p, 75hz OLED display panel, with a 140 degree field of view, SSD flash storage, 4GB mobile DDR4 RAM, Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI and Micro USB slots it’s certainly feature packed.

GameFace Labs CEO Edward Mason had this to say on the GFLDC “We’re thrilled to offer developers the opportunity to cater to the both mobile and PC markets and create immersive, cross-platform experiences, all on the same device”, adding “We believe Virtual Reality should be an untethered experience and our console brings that reality a step closer.”

The prototype will be on display at E3 but demos will be by appointment only. VRFocus will follow any further updates and announcements from GameFace Labs on the GFLDC HMD.
