Release Window Revealed for Unity’s Project Morpheus Support

Unity Technologies’ Unity Engine is currently competing with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 and Crytek’s CryENGINE to become the definitive development toolset for virtual reality (VR) experiences. This month saw the company release the latest version of the engine, Unity 5.1, which adds full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). Of course, there are plenty of other HMDs on their way to release right now, and Unity Technologies plans to support a wide range of them. Incoming support for Project Morpheus, for example, has recently been dated.

Project Morpheus

A newly-revealed roadmap for the Unity Engine reveals that support for Project Morpheus, which runs on Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE’s) PlayStation 4, is due to arrive in September 2015. The support is part of Unity 5.2, which is dated for release on 8th September, and should be arriving around the same time as other crucial features such as support for Windows 10 universal apps, a brand new SDK for audio spatialisation, and analytics integration. Following this, the next update, Unity 5.3, will arrive on 8th December.

Future updates are also set to add support for Microsoft’s HoloLens mixed reality (MR) HMD, though a date for this integration is not yet known. HoloLens itself is featuring at this week’s Unite developer conference, where this roadmap was announced by Lucas Meijer, Technical Director at Unity Technologies.

Project Morpheus integration arrives some time before the kit itself launches in the first half of 2016. SCE still has a lot to share about the device, including a name for the consumer product and pricing. The current prototype for the device features a 1080p OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The device is even capable of ‘reprojecting’ certain titles in 120fps, despite not running at this frame rate on the console itself. A host of new titles were confirmed for Project Morpheus at E3 2015 in Los Angeles, California last week.
