Sony: Morpheus is ‘the VR platform’ for Social Experiences

One of the key reservations about virtual reality (VR) technology in this day and age is the potentially isolating aspect of head-mounted displays (HMDs), which require users to cut themselves off from the rest of the world. Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has been keen to combat this perception and even made it a subject at the company’s E3 press conference tonight in Los Angeles, California.


SCE’s Andrew House labelled Project Morpheus as ‘the VR platform’ for social experiences. “But, up until now, many of these experiences have been solo experiences,” he said. “But what excites me is that Morpheus will be the virtual reality platform that can best realise the connection friends and family love about PS4 and the ability to play together. Imagine playing a Morpheus game while four of your friends are inside the same virtual world, playing alongside of you with DualShock 4s on the couch.”

House noted that these social aspects of Project Morpheus will be on display at E3 this week. A similar concept was seen at last year’s E3 when the company revealed compatible apps for its Project Morpheus tech demos. Players on a tablet could pilot a vehicle in the deep sea diving The Deep, interacting with the Project Morpheus user.

Project Morpheus boasts a 1080p OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The kit has seen a number of new titles announced tonight at SCE’s show, including RIGS, World War Toons and Godling. Most of these titles are expected to be on the show floor at E3 from 16th – 18th June. The kit itself is expected to launch in the first half of 2016. A price and date for the device has not yet been announced.
