SteamCrew VR, The Night Cafe Win big in Oculus’ Mobile VR Jam

Earlier in the year virtual reality (VR) specialist Oculus VR launched a brand new development jam for its Gear VR mobile head-mounted display (HMD). The contest sought new videogames and experiences for the device, offering over $1,000,000 USD to be split across a total of 27 winners. Finalists for the Jam were revealed a few weeks ago and VRFocus has gone into detail on a number of entries. Today however sees the overall winners for both categories announced.

The Jam offered Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Community awards for each track. The latter was chosen by community voting while the others were selected by a panel that included Palmer Luckey and John Carmack. Scoring the Platinum and $200,000 in prize money for the videogame track was SteamCrew VR, an innovative experience in which two players work together to steer a submarine through underwater environments. “It’s a hilariously good time that highlights just how great VR can be when immersed in a new world with friends,” Oculus VR said of the title.

The platinum experience and its $100,000 prize was awarded to The Night Cafe: An Immersive Tribute to Vincent van Gogh, a VR recreation of the artist’s famous painting that players could explore for themselves. Oculus VR urges Gear VR owners to ‘Find a quiet moment to visit the Night Cafe, and be sure to stay for the surprise at the end.’ The title also received a further $10,000 through the Community voted award.

As for the rest of the games, Gold awards were granted to DRIFT and Daydream Blue, each of which earned $100,000. Scorched Battalion, Panopticon, Bazaar and Neuralgia VR were awarded Silver prizes and $50,000. Finally, Bronze awards and $10,000 went to Atop the Wizard’s Tower, Technolust: Though Crimes, Polo, Wendy, Blind Swordsman, Maiden Chaos VR, Double Destruction, Audio Arena, PhaseShift and Captain Clark Adventures. The community voted title was The Boucinator.

In terms of apps and experiences, Gold awards with $50,000 were granted to Colosse and Along the Trail. Silver awards with $30,000 were given to Soundscape VR and Speech Center. Bronze awards and $10,000 went to DMZ: Memories of No Man’s Land, NeoS: The Universe, House of Languages, and Tana Pura.

“Everyone that submitted a final build will be receiving a special edition Mobile VR Jam 2015 t-shirt that’s exclusive to jam participants,” Oculus VR noted. “We’ll be reaching out to each of the teams for sizes and shipping details, so stay tuned!  Also, due to popular demand, we will keep the build links live unless the developers request we remove it by contacting us at vrjam@oculus.com.”

VRFocus will continue to follow the latest VR news, reporting back with any further updates.
