No Man’s Sky Dev Drops Big Hint for Project Morpheus, Oculus Rift Support

Since it’s reveal back in late 2013, No Man’s Sky has been a prime candidate for virtual reality (VR) support. The ambitious first-person exploration title from indie developer Hello Games allows players to travel across a massive universe with countless planets to discover. But, despite working closely with Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) on PlayStation 4 and also confirming a PC version of the title, Hello Games hasn’t commented on possible support for the Project Morpheus or Oculus Rift head-mounted displays (HMDs). That is until now.


Studio founder Sean Murray noted that he didn’t know what we was ‘allowed to say’ in terms of possible VR support in a recent interview with Edge. “I don’t know what I’m allowed to say,” he stated. “It’s something we’re thinking about. Morpheus, Oculus… There’s nothing more cool and sci-fi than VR and a big procedural universe. I think that, for the people who want to just explore, and even for the space combat and things like that, it would be a good fit. Let’s put it that way.”

While the second half of that comment leaves things open, the first half certainly suggests that the developer is working with VR to at least some degree. Fans will likely remember that Hello Games actually posted Vines of its staff using an Oculus Rift to walk around a virtual recreation of its offices last year. The following E3 Murray humorously revealed that Oculus VR itself had been in touch to ask them to stop posting these experiments online given the risks of walking around an environment with your vision obscured.

No Man’s Sky‘s focus on discovery certainly seems to mesh with VR’s potential to immerse players in new worlds. Could Hello Games really be planning to integrate Project Morpheus and Oculus Rift support into the title? Hopefully fans will find out in the near future.

  2. I wish they would just commit to a release date for 2015. Or maybe they cant be certain if they will be able to release it this year. …….

  3. My guess based on these teases:

    They’ll release No Man’s Sky as a standard (non-VR) version end of this year/early next year. Then when Morpheus becomes available 1H2016 NMS will support it in VR mode as a launch title. It might be one explanation why they’ve been so cagey about the game’s full release because it depends on hardware that has yet to get its own release date too.
