Space Hulk: Deathwing Still has Potential for VR

Focus Home Interactive’s Space Hulk: Deathwing has had a question mark over its head for more than a year now. Will the videogame support virtual reality (VR)? An early technical demonstration suggested that the potential for experiencing the Warhammer 40,000 inspired universe was great, however the team developing the videogame at Streum On Studios have been very quiet about their intentions. That was until last month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Los Angeles, where VRFocus caught up with the team.

“The assets for Space Hulk [Deathwing] have been built from the ground-up to support VR,” stated Peirrick Le Nestour, Vice CEO at Streum On Studios, suggesting that Oculus Rift support has been the plan since the development of the title began. However, the inherent design of the videogame makes delivering these assets at 90 frames-per-second a significant challenge.

While Le Nestour was keen to assure VRFocus that VR support is a constant concern at Streum On Studios, there are certain aspects of Space Hulk: Deathwing that may demand the team set aside their plans. The biggest of which, VRFocus was informed, is a technical issue with the multiplayer component; offering lag-free gameplay for up to five players is a challenge in itself, but doing so while locking the framerate? Streum On Studios are working on achieving this, but Le Nestour suggests that achieving the core gameplay goals has to take priority over the potential VR element of the videogame.

Space Hulk: Deathwing is certainly a promising prospect, and with the likes of World War Toons proving that VR is possible with first-person shooter (FPS) videogames many will no doubt hope that Streum On Studios are able to follow-through with their hopes of delivering VR support. VRFocus will of course keep you updated with all the latest details on Space Hulk: Deathwing and its potential VR compatibility.
