Portal’s GLaDOS Tries the HTC Vive in New Video

Valve is currently making a name for itself within virtual reality (VR) hardware thanks to its work on the HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) and the SteamVR system supporting it. But, as everyone will know, the company is also responsible for some of the most unforgettable creations within videogames. One of the most important is GLaDOS, the sometimes sinister, always hilarious antagonist/anti-hero/companion of the Portal series. Ellen McLain, the iconic voice behind the computer, recently got the chance to experience the HTC Vive for herself in an official video seen below.

This brief clip serves as a summary of the HTC Vive’s most recent stop on its ongoing world tour at The International DOTA 2 championship in Seattle, Washington. McLain introduces the clip from the Seattle Centre, capturing some of the thoughts of those lucky enough to sample it. The voice actress herself notes that the experience is ‘fabulous’, making her believe that she was in another world. There’s also a look at the championship itself from within Seattle’s Key Arena, where a new DOTA 2 VR experience made its debut just last week.

The HTC Vive itself is currently gearing up for a full consumer launch this holiday season. Details such as pricing and a specific launch date are yet to be revealed, although the Taiwanese smartphone maker is expected to reveal this information in October, where it aims to announced the full consumer edition of the device and offer a look at its launch line-up. The kit offers ‘Room Scale’ user-tracking with the SteamVR system, allowing players to walk around an area of up to 15 feet by 15 feet and have those movements replicated in-game.
