Sony: Project Morpheus is ‘ready to go’ but ‘waiting’ for Experiences

Its been well reported that Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) Project Morpheus head-mounted display (HMD) for virtual reality (VR) will be launching at some point in the first half of 2016. Now it seems this wide launch window is due to SCE waiting for videogames to catch up with the hardware.

In a recent Reddit post, a user noted what Dennis Castleman, hardware R&D engineer at SCE had said in a Facebook post about the HMD: “I’ve been working on Sony’s project Morpheus for 3 years, it’s going to go to market in 2016. It’s a bit different for things like cell phones or established technologies. When I was designing televisions it was usually 18 months to get a new model into production. A VR HMD is a bit different it also takes time for the component vendors to rampup for million unit volumes.” Adding: “In our case the HMD hardware is ready to go, we’re just waiting for the game titles to catch up with the hardware.”

Castleman also mentioned how some of the Project Morpheus competitors may have difficulties: “Oculus on the other hand faces a tougher battle getting the rift to market. They are relying on a contract manufacture in china to produce their units. They are a new company with out any volume manufacturing experience, they do have lots of cash and of course their parent company has deep pockets so capital isn’t going to be a problem. They have a lot of work ahead to successfully pull of the Riff introduction. No one on their executive team has any experience bringing high volume consumer devices to market.”

The next few months will certainly be telling whether Oculus VR have got it right, or if SCE have with its later launch. VRFocus will be reporting on all the latest facts from the VR industry as the HMD’s near their debut.

  1. Experiences which will never surface. The Morpheus will be the biggest VR failure as it isn’t as powerful or as open as the other headsets and is limited to poor performing console hardware. Buy this and it’s essentially dooming VR as people will dislike the limited scope.

    1. Judge it before you’ve tried it, that makes sense. I am sure they are well aware it is less powerful than competitors. But I am sure they will have done something to compensate and it stands a chance of being cheap enough that normal human beings can use it.

      1. Sorry to disappoint you, I already have tried it and it left me unimpressed. Nothing will compensate for the poverty of the PS4 and the price of this will very likely be more expensive than that of the console itself.

        1. You really think because your experience left you ”unimpressed”, the Morpheus will Fail? And others will experience the same? What on earth makes you think your opinion matters that much, lol!

please get off your high horse, no one cares about your experience, don’t buy, it’s that simple 😉

          1. Actually… if someone didn’t like the Morpheus they are entitled to that opinion. However it would be good to know exactly why they didn’t like it.

What exactly did you play? This guy is obviously a troll who’s never been in the same room as a Project Morpheus. There are 18.5mil PS4 owners who are very excited about the Morpheus. There are meaningful reviews (with video) of people who’ve tried the device and loved it. There are also reviews (with video) of people who have tried it in its earlier stages that have said it needed work. Take those reviews seriously. This guy probably thought the Wii U was going to be a blockbuster smash. Do us all a favor and crawl back into your hobbit hole and wait for Half Life 3. Keep building that dream machine on Cyberpowerpc for like $10k. Maybe with a 2nd job and your mom’s help you can get it just in time for the Oculus release date.

    2. Very true. I have use this as well, and it just as disappointing as the PS4. This will flop before it has a chance.

      1. As disappointing as the PS4? What planet are you from? PS4 is ruling the competition, hands down. If it’s “as disappointing as the PS4” then I have no doubt everyone will want one. Damn Xbox fags, always in denial, get a grip and take it on the chin like Microsoft balls.

And this is where your comment should have ended. If you can’t make a comment without invoking a gay slur don’t bother making a comment at all. Doing so you lost all credibility in your point and just shows you up.

  2. What is it with people having a sook over ps4 vs xb1 they are both good and are better in their own respects, ps4 better for gaming and xb1 better for social but it has gaming capability. In my opinion the Morpheus could have a chance, I’ve seen gameplay and it doesn’t look to bad assuming it doesn’t cost an insane amount it could be something I would buy.
