Valve Hosting VR Talk at EGX, HTC Vive Playable

Fans of Valve and HTC’s Vive virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) may recall that, shortly after its reveal in March 2015, the device was taken to EGX Rezzed in London, UK. Valve kept the kit under lock and key, however, with only developers able to see a demo while the company’s Chet Faliszek hosted a talk on it. 6 months on and the HTC Vive is returning to the UK in a much more open capacity, this time showcasing at the main EGX expo at the NEC in Birmingham. This will mark the first UK public hands-on for the device.

The kit will be available throughout the event from 24th – 27th September. Not only that but Faliszek will returning with another talk titled ‘The Year Ahead in VR’, this time scheduled for 15:00 BST on 24th September. That’s sure to be an interesting topic given that, within the next 9 months, the HTC Vive itself, Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus HMDs are all set to release to the consumer market. Don’t worry if you can’t make it to the event itself; EGX will be streaming the session on its official Youtube channel.

The HTC Vive is set to be the first out of the gates when it comes to consumer launches. Valve has promised a holiday 2015 release for the device, with a reveal of the consumer version and its launch line-up expected in October. The kit uses the company’s SteamVR system to provide ‘Room Scale’ user-tracking, which allows players to walk around an area of up to 15 feet by 15 feet and have those movements replicated within the given experience. The technology is yet to be seen in either the Oculus Rift or Project Morpheus.

VRFocus will continue to follow the HTC Vive closely, reporting back with the latest updates on it.
