Xbox Live Confirmed for HoloLens

At today’s GDC Europe session One game across PC, Phone, Xbox, and HoloLens, hosted by Jaime Rodriguez, Games Evangelist at Microsoft, Rodriguez spoke about the Xbox Live API being available for any device which is part of the ‘ Universal Windows Platform’ which includes the HoloLens head-mounted display (HMD).

In the session which VRFocus blogged, Rodriguez revealed that the XBox Live API is an integrated API which is available for Xbox One, Windows 10, Windows Phone and that the HoloLens is also included in this. And as any device which is part of the ‘Universal Windows Platform’ has access to the API this allows Xbox Live functionality across all supported platforms – including multiplayer gameplay.

Microsoft HoloLens - E3 2015

The possibility of being able to play online multiplayer with anyone across the globe in through the holographic display of the HoloLens will interest gamers everywhere, but while this is now a possibility its not going to happen any time soon.

With Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently stating that the first HoloLens development kits would be going out to developers and enterprises within the next year, gamers are going to have to be patient as a consumer device is still some way off.

VRFocus will continue to report on the latest announcements from GDC Europe and Microsoft’s HoloLens.
