AltspaceVR Coming to Both HTC Vive and Gear VR

2015 has been a busy year for the team at AltspaceVR and its upcoming virtual reality (VR) communication platform. May saw the company launch an open beta for the platform using the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD), which was quickly followed up with the announcement that it had raised $10.3 million USD with the help of investors, bringing its total funding to $15.7 million. This week the team has announced that AltspaceVR is moving beyond the Oculus Rift, also arriving on both the HTC Vive PC-based HMD and Gear VR mobile HMD.

Both announcements were made this week. The company has already used Gear VR to hold an online meeting on the platform in which it showcased the same shared web browsing and social viewing as seen in the PC version along with cross-platform communication. This includes being able to share streaming videos across both mobile and PC, which the company notes is a first for VR. Closed alpha trials of the Gear VR version of the platform will be taking place in the near future, and those interested can soon sign up for them.

AltspaceVR also intends to make use of the SteamVR features seen in the HTC Vive. It notes that user tracking could make body language more expressive and help VR users create more natural interactions.

“Our team has been working hard to support the new platform, and we’re thrilled that consumers around the world will be able to communicate with each other via AltspaceVR upon the launch of Vive,” said Eric Romo, CEO at AltspaceVR. “We appreciate that developers are also excited about Vive’s advanced capabilities and its integration with Steam, the largest digital distribution platform for PC gaming.”

VRFocus will continue to follow AltspaceVR closely, reporting back with any further updates from the company.
