Fashion Brand Rebecca Minkoff Releases Cardboard VR HMD

Due to its cheap, easy to build design the Google Cardboard head-mounted display (HMD) has seen numerous iterations by various companies. Now fashion brand Rebecca Minkoff has released a customised Cardboard HMD, for those that like the company’s style as well as virtual reality (VR) technology.

The company filmed its Rebecca Minkoff Fall 2015 show in VR, with help from VR production company Jaunt. This one of the reasons the Cardboard design was created, so that users could watch the 360 degree video of the catwalk show on its own HMD.

Talking to Racked, Rebecca Minkoff CEO, Uri Minkoff said the brand was initially interested in VR towards the end of last year: “When we filmed our runway show in VR, you could count the handful of professionally-made VR experiences available for the iPhone on one hand,” he told the fashion website.

“We’re the first fashion brand to democratize access to VR by making it available to our audience at home, or anyone who has a Google Cardboard headset. The great thing about our platform is that it doesn’t require a super-expensive computer. For $20, you can put your phone into a cardboard headset and be transported to the front row at our fashion row,” he adds.

The HMD is available on the Rebecca Minkoff website for $24.99 USD and in its retail outlets as well. And the brand confirms this won’t be the last time it delves into VR, with Uri Minkoff saying: “We’re waiting for the technology to evolve a bit. We’ll let other brands follow in our footsteps this season, and we’ll come back in a few months with a VR experience that sets the bar even higher.”

VRFocus will continue to follow any further announcements from Rebecca Minkoff regarding VR in the future.
