Slowly but surely virtual reality (VR) movies and experiences are becoming just as important as VR videogames. This week, for example, has seen the launch of MansLaughter, a brand new VR movie from director David Marlett. Meanwhile, work such as a VR adaption of Vincent van Gogh’s The Night Café is catching the attention of VR figureheads. Both of these experiences and more are set to be on display at a new film festival based in Canada that focuses exclusively on VR content.
That festival is the Festival of International Virtual and Augmented Reality Stories (FIVARS), a 2-day event that is set to take place in a few weeks’ time on 19th – 20th September 2015 at UG3 Live in Toronto from 11:00 – 19:00 EDT. 12 other VR experiences are set to be on display along with MansLaughter and The Night Café, the full list of which can be seen below. The roster includes both Canadian and international works from New Zealand, Russia, US, UK and Germany.
“We chose the name FIVARS carefully,” founding director Keram Malicki-Sanchez said of the festival. “We wanted to move away from the idea of ‘film’ festival because virtual reality is a nascent platform for new modes of storytelling that break from traditional cinematic convention.”
