Marriot Hotels Testing Samsung Gear VR Room Service

In a trend that seems to be developing where companies who provide services to customers, are now adding virtual reality (VR) into the mix. The Australian airline Qantas began offering customers at its Sydney and Melbourne International first class lounges and first class cabins the Gear VR earlier this year and now hotel chain Marriott is testing a new VR room service.

The international hotel group is trialling a ‘VRoom Service’ in two of its hotels, over the next couple of weeks in partnership with Samsung. Available at the  New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square and the London Marriott Hotel Park Lane, guests will be able to have a Samsung Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD) delivered to their room, to use over a 24 hour period.

While you may assume that you’d be able to access all the content currently available for the Gear VR, the experiences on offer will in fact be limited. Currently there are three “VR Postcard” experiences available which have been specifically commissioned by the hotel chain. The three 360 degree videos follow real travellers in different locals around the world. Viewers will be taken to Chile’s Andes mountains, an ice-cream shop in Rwanda and Beijing’s bustling streets.

Created by Framestore’s Virtual Reality Studio, the experiences, will also be available to download from Samsung’s Milk VR video platform for owners of the Gear VR.

Matthew Carroll, vice president, Marriott Hotels said in a statement: “Our guests want to be in inventive spaces that help foster their creativity and thinking. VRoom combines storytelling with technology, two things that are important to next generation travellers.”

VRFocus will continue to follow all the latest updates on the Gear VR and VR’s implementation around the world.
