UNIT9 Launches VR Survival Title Storm for Oculus Rift

You might think that the week after Oculus Connect 2 would be a quiet one for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), but it’s actually started out with a brand new release. Production studio UNIT9 has announced and launched Storm, a new survival experience built for Oculus VR’s device that can be downloaded in full for free. The developer describes this experience as part film, part videogame as well as a cross between The Thing and The Room.

In Storm, players are given 5 minutes to find shelter as they find themselves in the middle of a brutal snowstorm. To do this they must uncover several items covered by the ongoing onslaught. As time goes on the player’s character will get colder and start to slow down as the storm picks up. A trailer for the title can be seen below.

“We wanted to make something that doesn’t live clearly in either the film world or the games world,” said Storm director Anrick Bregman. You can walk around this environment for five minutes and just enjoy the craziness of the weather – something you never hope to enjoy in real life – but because it’s in VR it’s safe. So if you like films, it can be a film. But it’s also a game… We’ve fused the two.”

Storm is available either through an official website or through Oculus VR’s Share platform. UNIT9 intends to bring more updates to Storm over time, though the title is actually only the first in a planned series of experiences that explore nature’s various extremes. The developer hasn’t mentioned what theme its next project will take. VRFocus will continue to follow UNIT9’s work in VR closely, reporting back with the latest on it.

    1. Hi gothicvillas,

A lot of the time we’re not informed as to which version of the runtime is supported! For a new release such as this, however, I would think 0.7 is included!
