Rapid VR Reveals 360 VR film for World Surf League

Sydney-based virtual reality (VR) production studio Rapid VR, the team behind The Great Barrier Reef Experience has now released a new 360 degree VR film in conjunction with the World Surf League (WSL). The partnership also features Samsung and former WSL World Champion CJ Hobgood.

The 360 degree film was directed by surf filmmaker Taylor Steele at legendary surf break Teahupo’o, Tahiti. The immersive film features footage that transports viewers right into the heart of Teahupo’o’s most dangerous barrels, giving them the opportunity to experience the thrill of surfing one of the deadliest waves in the world.

Dave Prodan, World Surf League VP of Communications said in a statement: “Surfing is one of the most aesthetically beautiful activities on the planet. The barrier to entry for most people is the ocean – the most dynamic and dangerous field in all of sport. Advancements in technology created the opportunity to work with inspired individuals like Taylor Steele to offer a unique and engaging window into this world using the talents of some of the world’s best surfers.”

The project can now be experienced online via Facebook and YouTube, after debuting at the Portugal round of the World Surf League’s Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour. Viewed through the Youtube app on a smartphone, users can then utilise head-mounted displays (HMD) like Google Cardboard for a more immersive experience.

VRFocus will continue to follow all the latest news and update on VR as they’re announced.
