Sony: Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is a Standalone Game, First ‘doesn’t work in VR’

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) had plenty of new virtual reality (VR) titles to show off as its Paris Games Week (PGW) press conference last month. The company devoted a large amount of its show to the PlayStation VR head-mounted display (HMD) for the PlayStation 4. Among these reveals was Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, a spin-off of this year’s horror hit from Supermassive Games. There’s been some confusion as to if this new experience is tied to the original, but SCE has recently confirmed that it is indeed a standalone title.

Until Dawn: Rush of Blood

SCE Head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida confirmed as much in a recent episode of the PlayStation Blogcast. “It’s a new game,” he said of the title. “It’s not DLC – there’s some leak or whatever. It’s a completely new standalone game set in the same universe of Until Dawn and, actually, some characters from Until Dawn also show up. But the gameplay is totally different. Many people tweeted to us, commented to us that they want to see Until Dawn in VR but it doesn’t work because when you play Until Dawn there are lots of third-person view, like a cutscene because the game was made like a TV show, right? But in VR it has to be your perspective, so the game doesn’t work in VR.”

According to Yoshida, this spin-off will ‘borrow’ the scene, location, mood and characters of the original title in a new experience designed ‘from the ground up’ for VR and described as a ‘very scary rollercoaster ride’ with some other elements to it. Indeed, in the footage of Until Dawn: Rush of Blood already seen there are some quick glimpses of assets scene in the original title, which served as a sort of ‘choose your own adventure’ experience.

VRFocus will continue to follow Until Dawn: Rush of Blood closely, reporting back with the latest updates on the title.
