SteamVR Beta Updated Includes Oculus VR 0.8 SDK Support

Announced today on Valve’s videogame retail platform Steam, is a new set of updates for SteamVR Beta. The update will help developers working with the software and the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). The company has released a number of updates for the platform over the past few months in preparation for the release of the head-mounted displays (HMDs) next year.

The updates (listed below) feature small improvements to the HTC Vive’s Room Scale Tracking system – Lighthouse, which can track the HMD and the wireless controllers in a space up to 15 feet by 15 feet. Also included is support for Oculus VR’s 0.8.0 software development kit (SDK). The 0.8.0 SDK was released in October and back at its Oculus Connect 2 developer conference in September the company announced plans to launch the first full production version of the SDK, 1.0, in December 2015.

The SteamVR beta changes are as follows:

VR Dashboard:

  • Dashboard overlays that have been marked to autolaunch in the settings will start up automatically.

  • Tracked devices (controllers and the HMD) can now start tracking in any order, and controllers can continue returning poses even if the HMD loses tracking.

  • Updated Oculus support to the 0.8.0 SDK and runtime.
  • Removed the need to run the Oculus demo scene before starting SteamVR.

VRFocus will continue to bring you all the latest news regarding the developments of SteamVR as they’re announced.
