Convrge Announces Gear VR Beta to Launch this Weekend

While virtual reality (VR) has been founded on videogames the technology is being utilised for a number of other applications. One of which is communication. With Facebook owning Oculus VR its no surprise that being able to socialise with people across the globe would come about, but it’s other developers that are spearheading the advancement. One of those is ConvrgeVR, its software Convrge being available to Oculus Rift second development kit (DK2) head-mounted display (HMD) owners for a while. Now the company has announced the launch of a Gear VR Beta taking place this weekend.

ConvrgeVR will be opening access to it’s Gear VR beta starting Saturday 19th December. The team will be hosting an opening event where Gear VR, Oculus Rift DK2, and desktop users will all be able to mingle and watch YouTube together. The event will begin at 1pm PDT until 4pm PDT. Convrge invites will be going out to more than 500 people who signed up for the beta on top of its existing user base. The beta will feature two new environments, the cave and the campfire, alongside the tavern for a total of three available rooms. Also added is the ability for users to choose a style of room, name it, and add it to the list of available rooms. They then have the ability to kick anyone from that room they wish. Gear VR beta access is still currently open for those that still want to sign up, follow this link to the sign up page.

ConvrgeVR also took part in the Y Combinator Fellowship Program which ran from September to November. The Fellowship gives access to the world-class entrepreneurs who oversee the program as well as leaders in online communities from YC companies like Reddit and Twitch. Convrge participated as one of the remote teams from Seattle and received a $12,000 USD equity-free grant as part of the program.

VRFocus will continue to follow ConvrgeVR’s progress closely, reporting back with any further announcements.
