Crytek Teases Progression System for The Climb

Oculus Rift fans that were disappointed by the news that Crytek’s Robinson: The Journey would be making its debut on the PlayStation VR virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) were in for a treat this week. The Crysis developer announced a brand new Oculus Rift exclusive name The Climb which, as the name suggests, is all about rock climbing. There’s still much to learn about the project but, recently, the studio has teased to VRFocus that it will feature a progression system and win/loss scenarios.

Executive Producer Elijah Freeman said as much in an interview with VRFocus that will be published later on in the week. “So, it’s early in development; for me to really go into specific mechanics would be difficult,” Freeman said. “However, you’ll have a sense of a progression system, you’ll have a win/loss– these are the kind of standard things that you’ll feel. But, in general, there’s a lot of items that you’ll understand is similar to gaming.” The developer didn’t offer any other hints as to exactly how players will upgrade their climbing abilities.

The Climb is a first-person experience that will be taking advantage of both the standard Xbox One gamepad that will come bundled in with the Oculus Rift as well as the Oculus Touch position-tracked controllers, which will be releasing after the HMD itself finally becomes available. Developed using the company’s own, CryEngine middleware, a release date for the experience is yet to be set, though the Oculus Rift itself isn’t expected to arrive until Q1 2016.
