Deer Hunter VR Now Available for Gear VR

Last month it was revealed that Glu Mobile would be bringing its mobile-based hunting videogame series, Deer Hunter, to Oculus VR and Samsung’s Gear VR mobile-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) with Deer Hunter VR. The experience was said to be coming to the consumer version of the device, and could be played with or without a Bluetooth gamepad for the kit. This week, Deer Hunter VR has finally launched on the platform.

Deer Hunter VR is a first-person shooter (FPS) in which players hunt and take down an assortment of wild animals. Players will travel to a range of locations including the Pacific Northwest and Central Africa as they make the perfect hunt. The experience costs $4.99 USD.

VRFocus spoke to Glu Mobile about Deer Hunter a few weeks ago. The company’s Mike Rossmassler went into detail about what it had taken to fit the experience on to the Gear VR. “We also spent a lot of time reducing motion sickness. Early on, we had a slow-motion camera that followed the player’s final shot,” he said. “Combining this uncontrollable movement along a rail, with the ability to look in any direction at any time created a lot of vertigo and motion sickness, so we went through a lot of trial and error to make this moment impactful and interesting, without sacrificing player comfort.

“A lot of optimization was necessary to hit 60FPS, even on the Galaxy S6. Almost every shader and huge amounts of game code were optimized for VR. The lighting was completely redone, both artistically and technically. We had to rethink all of the UI and come up with a new design for VR.” Deer Hunter VR is not being planned for release on the Galaxy Note 4, the smartphone that supported the original Innovator Edition of the Gear VR.
