Ebay Removes Early Oculus Rift Listings, Luckey Offers Thanks

The launch of pre-orders for the consumer version of the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) was met with the expected rush last week, as fans hurried to be one of the first to pre-order the device. Those that were lucky enough to secure an early kit (and those that pledged a certain amount to Oculus VR’s 2012 Kickstarter campaign) will be getting the device on 28th March 2016. Inevitably, some that did secure an early order headed straight to internet auction site eBay to sell off their devices for profit. The site itself has seemingly put a stop to this for now, however.

As first noticed by Reddit user vrgamerdude, the listings for consumer Oculus Rift units are now completely absent from the site, with developer kits once again dominating the listings. Oculus Rift creator Palmer Luckey himself even offered thanks to eBay for removing the listings though, as another user pointed out, it may have more to do with the site’s ruling that users cannot sell an item that is over 30 days away from shipping. It could be that, come the end of February 2016, these listings crop up once again, then.

Those that pre-order an Oculus Rift from Oculus VR’s official site now won’t be getting their HMDs until June 2016, though may get the chance to receive the kit a little earlier if they pick up one of the upcoming bundles with the Oculus Ready PC when pre-orders for those launch next month. Anyone purchasing off of eBay also won’t be put in line to pre-order Oculus Touch, the company’s upcoming position tracked controllers that are due to arrive in the second half of next year having recently been delayed.

  1. To clarify, you mean people who order NOW won’t get their Oculus until July, but people who ordered in the first 24 hours will be getting their CV1 in March/April?
i.e. current orders won’t be fulfilled until July, not that ALL orders are pushed back to July..?
