Is Samsung’s Project Beyond Now Gear 360?

There wasn’t much news surrounding Samsung and Oculus VR’s Gear VR mobile-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, presumably to clear the way for the big reveals surrounding the latter’s Oculus Rift. The device did get a small showcase during Samsung’s press conference however, featuring the return of the company’s own 360 degree camera, Project Beyond. That name is strictly temporary, though, and it looks like the final title may now have been revealed.

Samsung Project Beyond

Galaxy Club has unveiled a new trademark from Samsung for something named Gear 360. Unless this is an entirely new piece of hardware we’ve yet to hear about, it’s not hard to guess at just what this could be. It is puzzling, though, that Samsung chose to continue referring to the device as Project Beyond at CES. Perhaps a bigger reveal for the kit is in store for later in the year, maybe at an event such as the 2016 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, where the company traditionally holds one of its Unpacked press events.

Project Beyond features 16 full HD sensors that can capture content in 3D. Other information such as pricing for the kit is yet to be revealed. For the latest on the device check back with VRFocus.
