Pachter on PSVR: it is ‘highly likely to be’ $400 USD

With the Oculus Rift pre-orders launched and that divisive price tag of $599 USD still being discussed by many in the industry, the focus is naturally going to move onto the other major headset manufacturers. Neither HTC/Valve or Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) have yet to reveal an official price, although HTC Vive is expected to reveal this first as pre-orders were announced to be starting in February. For SCE’s PlayStation VR on the other hand nothing is expected just yet, possibly why well-known industry analyst from Wedbush Securities, Michael Pachter has been giving his opinions on the subject recently.    

Via the newest episode of his Pachter Factor series the analyst said: “I think Morpheus (PlayStation VR) is highly likely to be 400 bucks. It’s gonna be hard… — if you actually look at the headset, there’s a lot there. So, I think it’s gonna be hard to price it below 300; It’s possible… if they believe they’re gonna make enough of them.

“A lot of people don’t have a really high-end PC laying around, so I think the PlayStation 4 crowd has a huge advantage. Sony’s got an install base, as of November, of thirty million of them. So, I can see Sony planning to sell ten million Morpheus units. I doubt that they will sell those in the first year, because there probably won’t be a lot of content, but I can see them planning to sell 10 million over time,” reports PSU.com.

The $400 USD price point is nothing new, after looking at previous statements from SCE saying that the PlayStation VR launch would be similar to a new console launch, hence around the $400 USD area. As the PlayStation VR is due to arrive in the first half of 2016 there’s still a few more months left to debate what the actual price will be before its officially unveiled.

  1. If the psvr comes in at the $400-$500 range and works as advertised, no production issues (red ring of death), and launches with 20 half decent titles, and some more promising titles (Heist, Eve, Battlezone, Rigs, No Man’s Sky, Driveclub)

    Mark my words, it will sell out all through 2016 and be the “tickle me elmo” of Christmas 2016

    Potentially could sell 5-10million of them in its first year no problem.

    Especially if it supports vr video (youtube) day one…

  2. Agreed. If they can hit that price target it’s going to be a huge success. There are lots of people I know crazy about VR that just can’t afford it, or they just think it’s too large a sum to spend on entertainment.
    I’m also expecting more bugs and other unexpected problems to be less with PSVR than the others, because they are already testing on final hardware configuration.
