A Chair in A Room Coming to HTC Vive as Full Horror Title

All the way back in 2014 indie developer Ryan Bousfield launched one of the first horror projects for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) in Chair in A Room, a short, free experience that was listed on the Oculus Share software portal. Later on in the year, Bousfield brought another version of the project to the Google Cardboard mobile-based HMD, making the horror mobile. The app saw huge success, and was recently even labelled as the number one app by Google itself. But Bousfield isn’t stopping there. Today, his studio, Wolf & Wood, is announcing A Chair in A Room: Greenwater, a brand new take on the project that’s designed as a full videogame for the HTC Vive.

The first-person, psychological horror videogame casts players as a protagonist that finds himself in a mental hospital with no knowledge of why he’s been incarcerated. Through a series of chapters that play out as memories set in America’s Deep South, players will discover how they came to end up in this situation. Though a narrative-driven experience, a number of logic-based puzzles will present themselves along the way, with players having to scour the environment for clues to unlock doors and more. Scares, of course, are also guaranteed.

The first teaser trailer for the title can currently be seen below. Unlike previous takes on the experience, A Chair in A Room: Greenwater is designed to make full use of the HTC Vive’s user-tracking capabilities, meaning that both Room Scale user tracking the kit’s position-tracked controllers are fully utilised. Wolf & Wood is currently planning to launch the experience in April 2016, which is of course when the HTC Vive itself should start to ship after pre-orders go live later this month. The studio also has plans to bring the project to the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR HMDs in the future.

VRFocus will have plenty more coverage of A Chair in A Room: Greenwater soon, so make sure to check back.
