Samsung Galaxy S7 Confirmed, Offering Gear VR for Free

As expected, Samsung has revealed the latest additions to its flagship line of Galaxy smartphones at its Unpacked press conference in Barcelona, Spain today. The electronics giant pulled back the curtain on the Galaxy S7 and its curved companion in the Galaxy S7 Edge. Both phones are set to be compatible with the company’s popular mobile-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), the Gear VR, which is made in partnership with Oculus VR. In fact, those that pick up the latest handsets will also get a Gear VR for free.

Consumer Gear VR 1

The news was announced as the event got underway, though had been rumoured in the weeks leading up to the event. Anyone that pre-orders one of the two new kits will get the HMD, which launched its consumer version in November 2015, at no extra cost. From there, all a user need do is plug their new phone into the kit and they’ll be able to access all the content that’s launched for the Gear VR thus far as well as new software that, so far, has been arriving in weekly instalments. For everyone else, the Gear VR costs just $99 USD.

In the UK, the phones can be pre-ordered from the Carphone Warehouse and the first people to do so will also get the phone three days before official launch.

Gear VR users on Galaxy S7 will benefit from improved power among other things, though items such as positional tracking are still yet to be implemented into the HMD.

Stay tuned to VRFocus for the latest updates on the Gear VR.
