Fantastic Contraption Dev Shows Early Footage of Seated Gameplay

The HTC Vive head-mounted display (HMD) is only a few weeks away from its consumer launch, and there’s going to be a bunch of titles available for early adopters to get their hands on. One of them is Fantastic Contraption from Northway Games, a building videogame that was officially announced as a launch title at the Steam VR Developer Showcase back in January. In a new video released this week Northway Games have been showcasing development for a seated version of it project, for gamers where space is of a premium.

One of the main features of the HTC Vive is its Room Scale tracking system, which uses two sensors to monitor where the headset and both motion controllers are. The system can work in a space of 1.5m x 2m (5 feet x 6.5 feet), but what if the space you’ve got to play in is smaller?

The studio has been working on a feature it calls ‘seated scale’, where gamers can use the HMD and its controllers at a table or desk to play Fantastic Contraption. The video shows some early beta footage of Northway Games’ progress, with one of the biggest differences to the normal videogame being the size of the objects are much smaller, enabling them to fit on a desk.

Northway Games state in the description that: “This isn’t production code and we aren’t sure we’ll ship with seated-mode available, but we’re hoping to give people the option to play seated if they aren’t into the whole “standing up” thing.”

The team may release further details in the coming weeks in the run up to launch, and if they do VRFocus will bring you the latest updates.
