Google Unveils Cardboard SDK for iOS

Developers will now be able to combine Google Cardboard with iOS.

While Google has naturally fully supported its virtual reality (VR) Cardboard head-mounted display (HMD) on its Android mobile platform, support for the rival iOS platform from Apple hasn’t been as quick. Now the company has unveiled a brand new Cardboard software development kit (SDK) for iOS.

Google describes on its developer page: “The Cardboard project aims at developing inexpensive virtual reality (VR) tools to allow everyone to enjoy VR in a simple, fun, and natural way. The Cardboard SDK for iOS enables developers familiar with OpenGL to quickly start creating VR applications. The toolkit simplifies many common VR development tasks, including: Lens distortion correction; Spatial audio; Head tracking; 3D calibration; Side-by-side rendering; Side-by-side rendering; Stereo geometry configuration; User input event handling.”

This will mean that customers who own an Apple product like the iPhone will eventually start seeing VR videogames and apps being created and ported to their devices.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of Google Cardboard, reporting back on the latest announcements.
