AMD Discuss Work on Assassin’s Creed VR

AMD discusses the technology the company provided for the production of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed VR Experience.

At the Game Developers Conference (GDC), San Francisco, last month, AMD revealed a brand new Assassin’s Creed title built exclusively for virtual reality (VR). Partnering with Ubisoft, 20th Century Fox, New Regency, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, and VR development studio Practical Magic, the AMD Radeon Pro Duo GPU and AMD LiquidVR SDK have been utilised to bring Assassin’s Creed VR to life.

Based on the upcoming live action motion-picture production, which in turn is based on Ubisoft’s hugely successful Assassin’s Creed videogame franchise, Assassin’s Creed VR is a live action cinematic VR experience shot concurrently on-set with the movie production team. By shooting on location, the studio has reportedly been able to recreate the sets from the film at a high quality level, using massive textures and complex geometry captured in places like Malta, Spain, and London.

“Creating such a complex and immersive experience in virtual reality demands an incredible amount of compute power. We asked AMD for their new AMD Radeon Pro Duo, which isn’t just a fast video card – it’s engineered from the bottom up with VR in mind. Features unique to AMD Radeon graphics such as asynchronous compute and LiquidVR technology are the actual difference between VR being good and VR being great,” said Matthew Lewis, president of Practical Magic VR and director of VR experiences, Practical Magic. “We’re using the AMD Radeon Pro Duo and LiquidVR technology across the entire production of Assassin’s Creed VR, and soon you’ll understand why. To enable high end virtual reality experiences requires deep collaboration between creativity and technology, and AMD is helping Practical Magic push the boundaries of possibility in VR.”

The AMD Radeon Pro Duo GPU featuring the AMD LiquidVR SDK delivers 16 TFLOPS of compute performance, straddling the worlds of both content creation and consumption. Together with AMD LiquidVR technology, AMD aims to simplify creation and optimisation of VR content.

Assassin’s Creed, starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, opens in theaters worldwide on 21st December 2016. The Assassin’s Creed VR experience has not yet received an official release date, though is likely to coincide with the release of the motion-picture.
